Victor Mosquera is a Colombian-Canadian artist whose work reflects themes of
surrealism, the human experience, and the unconscious through narrative-driven
paintings. His practice has developed a distinct visual language characterized by
layered compositions, luminous color, and a recurring cast of figures that seem to
surface from the unconscious, carrying traces of artistic traditions that range from
Renaissance art, African ceremonial art, Pre-Columbian sculpture, and Japanese
woodblock prints to contemporary figurative painting and the visual language of film,
video games, and illustration. At the center of Mosquera's practice is an ongoing
meditation on displacement, shaped by the experience of emigrating from South
America to Canada at a young age and enduring the sensation of existing between
cultures, memories, and shifting notions of belonging.
